March 13, 1989 - Time 21:40 - 22:20 UT. - Western Europe & North American View

During this time period, the largest levels of geomagnetic field disturbances of the March13-14, 1989 Great Geomagnetic Storm were observed over Northern Europe. Over portions of the Lower Baltic, the disturbance levels reached intensities fully 5 times larger than those that triggered the Hydro Quebec collapse earlier in the day. Here the intensification is occurring in a very large and intense Westward Electrojet extending all the way from Scandinavia to North America. Numerous power system problems were reported across Northern Europe and North America at these times, though none as catastrophic as reported earlier that day.
