Metatech is issuing a Geomagnetic Storm Advisory with storm activity expected to begin as early as April 28. The outlook is that this storm will be a major storm but along the category of size that occurred on April 6-7, 2000 and not as large as the recent March 31, 2001 storm or the July 15, 2000 storm. Attached is a PDF with the April 27, 2001 Geomagnetic Storm Advisory.
Please be advised that these several day-ahead projections have considerable uncertainty. Solar wind conditions when observed near earth will determine the severity of any geomagnetic storm activity as the plasma cloud arrives. Our customers that subscribe to this service will receive the usual continuous one-minute updates on these rapidly changing conditions.
On a positive note, it appears that the current active region is beginning to diminish in levels of activity and currently we do not expect any further important activity from the region. Our Longer-term outlook is more unsettled, as old Active Region 9415 is expected to re-appear next week and we will closely monitor this and other solar activity and alert you as warranted, should threatening conditions develop.
We have also enhanced our website to include a new web-page containing the same advisories that are attached along with older advisories for your information. We are also providing some storm animations of prior important geo-magnetic storm events so you can see the large-scale and dynamic conditions that occur during these storms for yourself. Currently we have an animation from the July 15, 2000 storm, which is the largest geomagnetic storm of this solar cycle. We will be posting other storms to this site in the future, so keep this web address handy. http://www.metatech-aps.com/Advisories.html
