Please find attached a special summary of the November 5-6, 2001 Geomagnetic Storm. As we had projected, this storm reached brief periods of major storm level, though it was less severe than either the July 15, 2000 storm or the March 31, 2001 storm. Included with this summary is a discussion two important topics. The first topic provides an overview of regional geomagnetic storm intensities and how there are important differences between broad planetary K Indices and regional impacts that can threaten reliability of a regional power grid. The second topic provides an overview of regional intensifications of and long-duration GIC exposures that can lead to transformer internal heating and damage, a timely topic considering the frequent storm conditions that have been observed lately.
