Solar Cycle 23 Long-term Forecast Update January 29, 2003

Please find attached a special summary “Metatech’s Geomagnetic Storm Forecast and Outlook for Solar Cycle 23 – (2003–2007)” where we provide an outlook for geomagnetic storm activity over the remainder of Cycle 23. This outlook and forecast is an update from our prior long-term forecast for Solar Cycle 23 issued in November 2001. This outlook is important for power grid and other critical infrastructure operators that can be impacted by large geomagnetic storms. This forecast suggests that nearly half of all geomagnetic storms expected in this solar cycle are yet to occur and will happen over the next 5 years. While there has been an unprecedented lull in the occurrence of large storms, the data suggests that one or two Geomagnetic Superstorms are probable during the remainder of Cycle 23.
